Real Madrid have confirmed new signing David Alaba has tested positive for COVID-19.
A brief club statement read: “Real Madrid C. F. confirm that our player David Alaba has tested positive for COVID-19.”
Alaba, 28, joined Real on a five-year deal this summer after running down his contract at Bayern Munich.
He will now have to self-isolate.
Alaba will be able to return to pre-season training with his club teammates once he tests negative. The club have given no indication of whether the player has symptoms or is asymptomatic.
Last week, the Austria international’s new club team-mate Karim Benzema also tested positive for COVID-19 and missed the recent friendly against Rangers as a result. Alaba was also not selected for the game and is yet to make an appearance for Real.
After losing their opening pre-season friendly on Sunday 2-1 against Rangers, Real will next host AC Milan on August 8.
Their league season begins the following weekend with a trip to Alaves.
